Description
This 3D printed chess game is graphically inspired by 2 of the worlds well known religions, Christianity and Judaism. This is a multi piece model that requires assembly for board/box. Items needed for assembly are a paperclip or similar sized hinge rods, wire cutters if using paper clips, superglue for tiles, hinges and latch. 2 clamps recommended to align box securely while mounting hinges. Details for printing and assembly below.
PLA used in these recommendations. settings can change depending on printer, filament, temp, slicer, etc.
50%+ infill on chess board with .3 layer. Zigzag infill.
.2 layer for all else.
100% infill on latch and hinge parts.
Supports needed for white king.
My print speed is 60 leading to this average print time of 50 hours total. an hour per game piece, 8 hours per board and an hour for latch and hinges. Assembly instructions below.
Assembly
Print a BOARD half and a pawn. Check pawn to box clamp for secure fit. Can adjust slicer settings to get a tighter/looser fit or file inside of game pieces to fit.
Print Pieces when satisfied.
Print 2nd box and remaining parts.
Clean HINGES, cut paper clips or use hinge rods to assemble hinges to each other. Can melt ends of hinge after to secure rods from sliding out through excessive use.
Box has a fine outline cutout of hinge to apply hinges accurately. If they do not lay smooth, lightly file off the tapered edge. Secure box using clamps. Once properly aligned, glue hinges on, careful not to run glue into box seam.
Use a tiny dab of glue on the larger end of each LATCH nob and assemble through box knob holes. Place latch on exterior of one of the box knobs before assembling. Test latch assembly for clean fit before applying glue.
Tiles print in sets of 8. Need 4 sets of each color. Tiles glue onto board and will align to edge of board and to edge of each other, no space. Test going the direction of 4 without glue to ensure print setting are accurate. Because of smooth surface, very little glue needed but ensure edges lay smooth around board rim. Can avoid using 32 tiles if board is same color and achieved a clean board print but applying the tiles is more difficult and creates a slight up and down texture between tiles.
